Born in Hanau-Grossauheim in 1929. School-leaving exam (Abitur) - violin lessons under Zentner and Uhlemann at the Hölscher school; interest in music supported above all by friendship with the violinist Gert Hölscher. Early acquaintance with the pianist Günter Ludwig; began studies with the Flesch-Moodie pupil Marie-Louise Graef-Moench.

| Kottmann Prize |

Each year during the "International Musiktage Hofheim" the Alois Kottmann Prize of € 3000 is awarded in conjunction with the city of Frankfurt am Main for classical, cantando violin playing. The Kottmann Prize is aimed at promoting the Frankfurt Carl Flesch tradition of violin playing, whose greatest proponents were Alma Moodie in Frankfurt and, further afield in Europe, Max Rostal.

| Collegium Instrumentale |

Collegium Instrumentale Alois Kottmann was founded in 1968 with the aim of creating an orchestral sound which is rich in overtones, translucent and revealing. Supported by its own society which was founded by the Bethmann Bank, the Collegium is a Frankfurt ensemble which has played concerts in the USA, Mexico City, the UK and elsewhere.

The Kottmann School has produced two chamber orchestras: the Collegium Instrumentale Alois Kottmann, founded in 1968, and the "Kottmann Streicher" (Kottmann Strings) which are now in their fifteenth year.
This chamber orchestra was originally established to promote and foster ensemble-playing as part of a violin conservatory education. After taking their final examinations the members stayed together to form an orchestra with its own characteristic string-sound. ... |
